When you take your Saphe on car trips in Europe, it is a good idea to be aware of the local rules for traffic alerts. Although Saphe is designed to increase road safety by providing warnings about hazards on the road, legislation can vary from country to country. In some places, use is without problems, while others have rules that may result in fines or confiscation. Here is an overview of the countries where you should be extra cautious.
Note: This article is for guidance only. Rules may change, so we always recommend checking the current local laws before using your Saphe abroad.
Quick overview
| Country | Status |
|---|---|
| Switzerland | Prohibited – turn off and remove the device |
| Germany | Legal to own, but speed control warnings must be disabled while driving |
| France | Saphe is not approved – do not use it |
| Turkey, Cyprus, Macedonia | Illegal to warn about speed controls |
| Austria | Only general warnings about risk zones may be allowed |
| Belgium | Only general warnings about dangerous zones are allowed |
Switzerland
In Switzerland, it is not permitted to use equipment that warns about speed controls. To avoid problems, we recommend that you turn off your Saphe while driving there, and to be on the safe side, you can remove it so it is not visible.
Germany
In Germany, the driver is not allowed to use equipment that warns about speed controls, but it is legal to own such equipment. Therefore, you can have your Saphe with you as long as the function that warns about speed controls is turned off while driving.
France
In France, only approved products may warn about speed controls. Saphe is not approved there, and therefore we recommend that you do not use it in France. We do not have information on whether fines are issued, but it is best to be cautious.
Turkey, Cyprus and Macedonia
In these countries, it is not allowed to warn about speed controls. Unfortunately, we do not have information about fines or enforcement, so please pay attention to the local rules during your trip.
Austria
In Austria, traffic alerts may not be used to give precise warnings about speed cameras, but general warnings about risk zones may be allowed.
Belgium
As in Austria and France, precise warnings about speed cameras are not permitted, while general warnings about dangerous areas are acceptable.
Brief summary
Saphe is not permitted in Switzerland and can pose challenges in Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and Austria depending on usage. In France and several other countries, it is important that the device only provides general warnings about "dangerous zones" to be legal. Always remember to familiarise yourself with local rules before using your Saphe abroad.
